It's a Filipino Thing
observations about Filipinos by Filipinos (well, two of them)
Weird new years stuff

As you probably have read, we have weird quirky superstitions associated with our culture. I mean, who doesn’t, right? Well New Years eve is no exception to that weird rule. My sister made reference to this New Years thing in one of her comments, so I thought it would be best to reiterate and explain.

Now, it’s possible some of these traditions were driven only by my family, but over the years I saw more and more of my cousins – here and abroad – falling suit. or perhaps I have been doing this for so long, even if it’s not true, I believe it!

Always have money in your pockets or hands at the strike of midnight. Brings wealth and good luck with money on the new year. The more the better.

Wear polka dots, even if it’s just underwear, polka dots bring good luck.

Eat noodles. (see birthday noodles post. also can apply for new years)

In your house, keep drawers slightly ajar, doors of closets slightly open. Welcomes new spirits, promotes openness.

Cotton balls should be thrown around the house. Sign of good luck and good fortune. I mean, it is the fabric of our life, right?

In the Philippines, on New Years eve, there’s huge fireworks all over the city. On the streets and organized chaos. The next day, you go door to door to your titos, titas and cousins, lola’s and lolo’s houses to eat (noodles were common), wish them well and if you were younger than them, you receive a red envelope with money

Welcome the new year Filipino style!

One other thing…Filipinos would throw coins in the air at midnight, mostly for the kids. It was fun!
